Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book a visit with Father Christmas?

Not as part of the Christmas visit. Father Christmas roams the house and gardens on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays during term time, so you may bump into him for a chat. The only dedicated ways to meet him are Breakfast with Santa and the Quiet Santa visits for families with additional needs.

Do I need to book ahead?

No. Tickets are sold on the day from the ticket office only, and National Trust members get in free.

Is the whole house open?

No. Some rooms stay closed for winter conservation during December. Every open room has its own themed Christmas tree, and the house is closed 24–26 December.

Where can we get something to eat?

The Courtyard café serves homemade onepots, soups, bakes and festive treats. The Grab and Go takeaway opens at weekends and in school holidays. The pizza trailer under the trees has festive specials, veggie options, hot chocolate and coffee at weekends, and every day from 19 December to 3 January except Christmas Day. You can also bring your own picnic.

Are there walks to do while we're there?

Yes. The Obelisk Lodge walk crosses the parkland, and the Menagerie Garden walk goes through the gardens past historic walls and towering trees.
