Tips & Advice
- Book online ahead, since entry runs in timed slots every 15 minutes, phone bookings aren't taken and walk-ins on the day aren't guaranteed entry.
- Wrap up warm and wear wellies or sturdy shoes, because much of the visit is outdoors, and bring a torch if you're coming for the Twilight lights.
- Arrive at the Grotto at the exact time on your Father Christmas ticket, not earlier, because early arrivals may be turned away and missing your slot risks no visit.
- Bring cash or a card for fairground tokens and Lady Astor boat trips, which cost extra, and remember boat tickets are only sold on the day at the Boathouse.
- Do the Castle, play areas, maze and Lake Walk early in your visit, because these close well before the grounds do and other attractions start closing before the final exit.
Special Events & Promotions
- SEN Father Christmas sessions for children with SEN requirements on Saturday 28 November and Saturday 5 December, with communication picture cards (sold out for 2026).
- Twilight tickets cover the lights, music and interactive light displays and cost more than Daytime tickets, including for annual members.
- Lady Astor boat trips on weekends from 20 November to 20 December, for an extra charge, bought on the day at the Edwardian Boathouse and subject to weather.
- Fairground rides (Gallopers, Big Wheel and Octopus) run on tokens bought separately, online in advance or at the Ticket Hut.
- Annual Members get free Daytime admission for earlier arrivals on most dates and a discount on early Twilight entry.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a Daytime and a Twilight ticket?
A Daytime visit covers the Castle, the Nutcracker trail and characters, the play areas, the maze, the Military Museum and Father Christmas. Twilight entry starts as darkness falls and includes the lights, colour washes, music and interactive displays across the Castle, gardens and lake. Daytime visitors can stay for the first two hours of Twilight, but they must leave by their Daytime last exit.
Is a visit to Father Christmas included?
No. It's an optional extra, and you must pre-book it for each child. Mother Christmas greets you at the post office. Then you follow a snowy woodland path past Father Christmas's workshop and his elves to his log cabin, where every child gets an age-appropriate gift. Your Grotto time is later than your grounds entry, and up to four adults per group can go in. There's no Grotto on 25–26 November or 30 November–3 December, and none after Christmas Eve.
Where can we eat and drink?
You can choose from the Moat Grab & Go, the Moat Restaurant, the Donut Hut, the Two Sisters Cabin, the Crepes stand, the Pavilion Café, the Hotdog Hut, Jacket Potatoes, the Loggia Bar and the Red Van. Between them they serve hot food, cakes, mulled wine, mulled cider and hot chocolate. At the Loggia Bar you can toast marshmallows over the fire pits. Picnics are welcome, but picnic areas are limited, and the Crepes stand has no gluten-free or vegan options.
Can we take a pushchair or wheelchair into the Castle?
Manual wheelchairs can reach the Castle's ground floor. Motorised wheelchairs, prams and buggies can't go into the Castle.
How long should we allow for a visit?
Allow at least two and a half hours. It depends on what you do, the size and ages of your group, and how busy the day is. A Lady Astor boat trip adds about 20 minutes.
