Know Before You Go

  • Parking: Several garages and surface parking are available nearby. Surface parking is paid on weekdays 8:00–18:00 and Saturdays 8:00–14:00, and free at other stated times; garages are paid every day.

Tips & Advice

  • Bring a bank card or get a FestiPay card on arrival, because the market's food and drink stalls do not accept cash.
  • Register your FestiPay card in the app so it can be blocked and replaced if you lose it, and cash out any leftover balance before you go home.
  • Come on a Sunday if you can, because surface parking in the city centre is free all day, while the nearby underground garages charge every day.
  • Traffic in the city centre is heavier than usual during Advent, so set off early and think about parking on the edge of the centre.
  • Schools and nurseries should register ahead, because pre-registered groups get free skating and priority on the Advent ice rink on weekday mornings.

Special Events & Promotions

  • On November 21 the city's festive lights are switched on, followed by the Jégvirágkarnevál (Ice Flower Carnival) parade from Kossuth tér to Szent Anna utca.
  • A traditional procession and an Advent candle-lighting take place on each Advent Sunday. On December 20 the fourth candle is lit and the Bethlehem flame is handed over.
  • Kids can meet St. Nicholas (Mikulás) at the Advent Kuckó on Dósa nádor tér on December 5 and 6.
  • The Ugly Sweater Run (Ronda Pulcsis Futás) starts from Baltazár Dezső tér on November 28.
  • There is a community lantern-making workshop on December 17, and the 'Lélektől lélekig' lantern parade winds through the city centre on December 20.

Quick Actions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pay with cash at the food and drink stalls?

No. The food and drink stalls are cashless only, so pay by bank card or with a FestiPay card you can pick up and top up on site. The craft and gift merchants still take both cash and cards.

How does the FestiPay card work?

You pay a refundable deposit for the card and get it back when you return the card undamaged. Topping up is free, and you can top up with cash or card. Register the card in the FestiPay app so it can be blocked and replaced if you lose it. Cash out any balance left from on-site top-ups at a top-up point before you leave.

Where should I park?

The Sas utca, Hal köz and Bethlen utca underground garages are right by the market, and so is the Kölcsey Központ car park. Surface spaces in the city centre are free all day on Sundays and at set times on weekday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The garages charge every day.

What is there for children?

Kids can enjoy the Advent ice rink, the baroque carousel, the Christmas mini train, Meseváros, the Advent Kuckó, the nativity scene and the reindeer family. On opening day, nursery and kindergarten children decorate Christmas trees at Meseváros.

Is there live music?

Yes. Bands and singers play the Advent Stage on Kossuth tér on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. The line-up includes Bolyki Balázs and B4, Jamie Winchester, Boggie, Szirota Jennifer and Wolf Kati.
